Homeschool, Homelife, Homecoming.

Photo collage labed "Life in Oregon again." First photo: Emilia's First Day of Second Grade chalkboard sign. Second photo: Emilia waving from atop a carousel horse at Oregon Zoo. Third photo: Vanellope, a tuxedo cat, lies on top a multicolored crochet ripple blanket with cheerful, bright school table/craft space in blurry background. Fourth photo: Emilia smiles at camera while sitting and drawing with Crayons, color pencils, and schoolbooks scattered around her on red and white checkered picnic blanket in a forested backyard.

And we’re back. Back in Corvallis. Back to homeschooling. And (in the words of Caron Wheeler), back to life, back to reality, back to the here and now, yeah. The condensed backstory goes like this: due to unforeseen circumstances, we reluctantly moved north to Washington in August 2023 and immediately knew it wasn’t for us, so we moved back to Oregon in July 2024. Rejoice!

Once again, Corvallis, with its welcoming diverse community, makes it easy not to feel like an outsider (thanks to Oregon State University attracting students and educators from around the world who settle down here). There are days, though, when I’m desperate for the familiarity of SoCal and my Orange County stompin’ grounds (OK, Disneyland), but I don’t miss California (except for Disney California Adventure). The only way to become more comfortable in Corvallis is to get out of my comfort zone, which starts with getting my mildly agoraphobic self past the front door (after calculating a route with no left turns, checking the weather forecast, and consulting my horoscope). Spontaneity is key —or anti-anxiety meds.

That said, we have done more around Corvallis in the past two-and-a-half months than anywhere else in the last five years (including our first time living here). And we’re doing it as COVID-conscious as possible (yes, that means continuing to wear an N95 mask in nearly all public indoor spaces). I even contemplated starting a homeschool group — thought up a cute little acronym name and everything. The idea sounds good on paper, where it will remain until I regret not doing it sooner.

On the subject of homeschooling: we just started our second, um, third, er, what year are we? We’ve been in the constant chaos of packing and moving around (we’ve lived in 5 different properties, 3 cities, and 2 states since leaving California in 2019) and our grade levels are all over the place too. We’re in a much better place this school year thanks to a hunch I had back in February, which I will go deeper into in another post coming up soon!

To our longtime blog readers, thank you for returning! If you’re new ’round here, hello! We invite you to check out our Welcome and About Us pages. Emilia and I look forward to sharing bits of our daily life with you!
